NEW DELHI, September 20: Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh telephoned Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayaram Jayalalithaa on Monday soon after receiving her letter seeking suspension of work at the Koodankulam nuclear plant until the local residents' fears are allayed over its safety. He sought her help to resolve the issue.

He rushed Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) V Narayanasamy to Koodankulam to hold talks with the local people, who have been agitating for the past 11 days against the proposed nuclear plant there.

The minister arrived in Chennai this morning on his way to Koodankulam. "All safety measures in the plant are intact.

We are hopeful that we will be able to convince the people and allay their fears over the plant," he told reporters in Chennai.

The agitation against the project has intensified since late last month after the authorities announced that the first of the two 1x1000 MWe reactors set up at the coastal village of Koodankulam with Russian assistance will be commissioned in December.
