Thirteen power sets to arrive from China

Thirteen new power sets ordered from China by the Sri Lanka Railways will arrive in the country early next year.

The contract has been awarded to China South Locomotive and Rolling Stock Corporation Ltd.

The estimated cost for this is around Rs 11,900 million.

A Sri Lanka Railways spokesperson said the new power sets will include two luxury power sets to be used for tourist transportation.

Seven power sets will be used in the upcountry line while four other power sets will be deployed to improve the Kelani valley railway line.

“For the first time, we have planned to deploy these power sets for long distance operations including the upcountry service. They have been specially designed for long distance journeys with all facilities,” the spokesperson added.

“These power sets will provide a safe service to commuters while easing the morning and afternoon traffic,” he said. The main objective of importing these power sets is to enhance the train service in Sri Lanka by reducing travel time,contributing towards promoting tourism, uplifting the productivity of the railway service and providing a quality service to the commuters.
