Main road closed for traffic at night to facilitate illicit gemming

By Ratnapura Correspondent

Illicit gemming carried out by an organised group on the Ratnapura-Kosgala main road on the pretext of carpeting it, was highlighted at the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council meeting held on September 27.

The meeting was presided by Chairman Ranjith Bandara.

Both the ruling party and the opposition condemned the destruction caused to the environment by illegal gemming on roads by ‘powerfull people’.

Opposition Leader A. A. Wijethunga said that a certain organised party was involved in illicit gemming through out the night till dawn on the Ratnapura-Karapincha Kosgala road. They didn’t allow vehicles to ply on this road after 10.00 p.m. till morning. If this destructive act was allowed to continue the public would never be able to use this road for their transportation.

Provincial minister of Roads Athula Kumara Rahubadda said the matter was discussed at the Ratnapura District Co-ordinating committee meeting too. He proposed that Sabragamuwa DIG should be informed and request him to put an end to this illicit gemming.

PC member Iflar M. Yehiya and Chairman Ranjith Bandara also spoke.
