10 per cent of vehicles entering Kandy guilty of pollution

By Ifham Nizam

Nearly 10 per cent of the vehicles entering the city of Kandy are polluting the town due to technical reason and other engine issues, Air Resource Management Centre of the Environment Ministry said.

The Ministry of Environment (AirMac) and the Department of Motor Traffic are conducting a three-day random emission testing programme in the Kandy city to minimize old vehicles and vehicles with technical problems entering and polluting the city.

The three day programme commenced yesterday in the sacred city where thousands are flocking to witness the Esala Perahera.

An AirMac spokesman said that by noon they had tested more than 175 vehicles and found that 10 per cent of them were not suitable to run on the road unless they serviced and repaired immediately.

He says that the sole aim of the programme is to promote cleaner vehicles which don’t cause health hazards.

"We thought this is the peak time of the year especially due to the Kandy Perahera. Random testing programme would certainly be a red light for polluters who belong to two categories-one group does it knowingly while the other needs to be educated," the spokesman added.
