The human-elephant conflict has intensified as a result of rapidly declining forest cover in Nachchaduwa and Thuruwila. As revealed, the forest cover which was spreading over 3000 acres has now shrunk to 100 acres due to uncontrolled human activities.
This was revealed at a press conference held with Agrarian and Wildlife Minister S M Chandrasena.
As estimated about 80 elephants are living in this limited forest cover.
These forest lands had been cleared for cultivations.
