The Health Ministry said yesterday that dengue fever was rapidly spreading throughout the country and urged the public to keep their premises free from dengue mosquito breeding sites. A Health Ministry spokesman said destroying dengue mosquito breeding sites is the most effective way of preventing dengue.
"All should pay their attention towards this problem and clean mosquito breeding sites within their properties. Special attention should be paid to clean gutters. Even a tea spoon of water is adequate for dengue mosquitoes to breed," he said.
According to the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry, 14,298 dengue cases were reported from all parts of the country by August 2. The highest number of dengue cases, 5,532 were reported from Colombo district while Colombo Municipal Council area recorded 1,946 Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) cases.
Other parts of the Colombo district recorded 3,589 dengue cases. Gampaha, Kalutara and Batticaloa districts recorded 2,066,796 and 653 dengue cases while Ratnapura district recorded 565 dengue cases.
During last month, 4,011 dengue cases were reported from all parts of the country.
The Health Ministry requested the public to seek immediate medical treatment from a State hospital or from a qualified and experienced medical practitioner for fever.
