The Public Health Department of the Colombo Municipal Council says there is an increase in the number of cases being filed under the Food Act, Mosquito Borne Diseases Ordinance and against owners of unlicensed hotels and eating houses.
Chief Public Health Inspector of the Public Health Department (PHD), W.G. Karunatilake the total number of cases filed by the PHD under the Mosquito Borne Diseases Ordinance from the beginning of year till the second week of October was 179 while the total number of cases filed under the Food Act during the same period was 270.
He said that over 160 cases had been filed against those retailing food without a trade license from the beginning of the year till the second week of October.
Nine cases had been filed under the Mosquito Borne Diseases Ordinance within the last two weeks while 13 cases had been filed within the same period against unlicensed restaurant, hotel and eating house owners. More than Rs. 80,000 had been collected as fines.
Within the nine months – from January till September 30 the Council collected Rs. 300,000 from fines charged for cases filed under the Mosquito Borne Diseases Ordinance while the council has also collected over 219,000 for cases under the Food Act within the same period, Karunatilake noted.
