Rs. 90 mn solid waste project in Kurunegala

Following numerous complaints from the Kurunegala district about the increasing garbage problem, the Environment Ministry has decided to establish solid waste management project there at an estimated cost of Rs. 90 million.

On the invitation of the Central Environment Authority, (CEA) Chairman, Charitha Herath, Environment Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa on Saturday laid the foundation stone to set up a compost yard under the ‘Pilisaru’ project.

According to Yapa, more than 40 tonnes of waste is daily gathered in the Kurunegala district with almost 36 tonnes being gathered in the Municipal Council area alone.

Environment Ministry officials said yesterday that already a mountain of waste had piled up at Sundirapola area in Kurunegala.

Herath said they had already found solutions to almost 80 per cent of waste problems facing provincial councils.

He also said that finding solutions to garbage problem is high on their agenda, and that they are in the process of completing a number of such projects under the Pilisaru programme.
