CMC bans sale, slaughter of animals for World Animals day

The Colombo Municipal Council will celebrate World Animal Day by stopping the sale of meat and slaughtering of animals today (04).

Chief City Veterinarian Dr. S. Illeperuma said yesterday that supermarkets and meet stalls in the city have been instructed to refrain from selling meat items today (04) to mark the day

The Council issued a circular in May instructing the Slaughter Houses Supermarkets and meat stalls to refrain from slaughtering animals or the sale of meat in commemoration of the World Animal Day.

Approximately 200 heads of cattle are slaughtered for the city’s consumption from several parts of the country. However even other meat including chicken would be halted on World Animal Day, he said.

The city already has had a short supply of meat within the past few days owing to a strike launched by countrywide PHIs, Dr. Illeperuma added. (DJ)
