There is no shortage of coal for power generation in the country as alleged by certain quarters, as the Power and Energy Ministry has awarded tenders to obtain the required supplies without a break, Power and Energy Secretary M. M. C. Ferdinando said.
Certain sections of the Ceylon Electricity Board however said a shortage was currently being felt. They alleged that Norachcholai had been shut down under the guise of carrying out maintenance due to a shortage of coal.
Meanwhile, according to CEB System Control General Manager, T. D. Handagama, water levels in major reservoirs were tottering at 35 per cent. Thus, the hydropower generation had been reduced to 20 per cent.
Meteorological Department reports indicate that the country will not experience heavy rains till the end of November.
The highest water level has been recorded from Maussakele at 47 per cent and the lowest in Samanalawewa at 19 per cent during the last couple of days.
Current water levels are far below the levels experienced during the same period last year. According to, Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, it was the worst drought faced by the country in the last 50 years or so.
However, he is on record as stating that power supplly will not be interrupted at any coast.
