Housing Minister Wimal Weerawansa on Monday (3) urged the UNSG Ban Ki-moon not to justify the scourge of tourism. While reiterating Sri Lanka’s concerns over the global organization being selective in tackling terrorism, the National Freedom Front (NFF) leader said that the UNSG should take tangible measures to protect the world from climate change.
Addressing a public meeting to mark the World Habitat Day, Weerawansa alleged that the global community had failed in their efforts, though every year it was celebrated. He emphasized the importance of tackling the issues as the current focus was on seminars, conferences and various events.
Blaming the UN for failure on its part to take meaningful measures to tackle climate change, Weerawansa alleged that various UN sponsored events had given an opportunity to UN personnel to go on trips. The UN had done absolutely nothing to prevent the industrialized world from causing environmental destruction, the former JVP firebrand said urging the global community to tackle climate change now.
Addressing the gathering, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa explained the measures taken by the government to improve the living conditions of those living in slums.
The Defence Secretary said that the government was in the process of building 17,500 housing units at six different sites for low income families.
Rajapaksa said that green zones would be established in a 10 acre area out of 26 acres allocated for development work in the area presently occupied by the Army headquarters and adjoining sites. According to him, parliament would introduce laws to ensure that these green zones couldn’t be changed.
