A private pharmacy at Attidiya, Ratmalana which sold excessive amounts of cough syrup and pain killers to schoolchildren was raided by the Cosmetic Devices and Drug Regulatory Authority recently. The husband and wife duo who ran the pharmacy is now in custody, Health Ministry spokesman W.M.D. Vanninayake said.
According to Vanninayake, the husband and wife had sold Corex syrup and pain killers to the children at a high price. Earlier, the Health Ministry banned selling cough syrups and pain killers to the public without prescriptions because schoolchildren used these as a substitute for liquor. The raided private pharmacy had large amounts of Corex syrups and pain killers in its stores to sell to schoolchildren.
The Authority raided the pharmacy using a decoy following a tip off. Legal action is to be taken against the husband and wife shortly, he said.
The Authority raided another private pharmacy which was illegally operating inside a private hospital at Wellawatta, using another decoy. Legal action is to be taken against the owners of this pharmacy soon, he added.
