The scientific studies have proved that Wetlands had a direct impact on the evolution of the mankind and Sri Lanka boasts of having a several wetlands rich in biodiversity, Central Environment Authority (CEA) Chairman Dr. Charitha Herath said.
Addressing a function held to announce the national plan to mark the ‘World Wetlands Day’ on February 2nd, 2012 and the School competition programme on wetlands, Dr. Herath said Sri Lanka is in the forefront among many other countries in the number of wetlands it possesses and their biodiversity though it is a small country.
“Wetlands play a major role in protecting the biodiversity, natural habitat and vital natural resources like water. Therefore, the protection and them smooth maintenance of wetlands has a direct bearing on the survival of the human being on the earth. The CEA has cooperated with the Forest Conservation Department and the Ceylon Biscuits to prepare a national programme to protect country’s wetlands,” Dr. Herath said. The school programmes are expected to create awareness among school children about the importance of saving wetlands. Public lectures, workshops and other media events through print and electronic media will educate the people on wetlands and their positive impact on the climate, he said.
The ‘Denuma Minuma’ school programme covering all 95 educational divisions is open to students in grades 10 to 13 and the contest will be held on district, provincial and national level. Winners will get financial gifts and many other awards including certificates and cups.
