By Sandun A. Jayasekera
One of the extra burdens inherited by modern society was the excessive production of solid waste with the proper disposal of solid waste becoming a major issue, Environment Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said.

Addressing a ceremony held to distribute vehicles used to transport solid waste to local government bodies at the Central Environment Authority (CEA) yesterday, Minister Yapa had commended the efforts taken by the Sri Lankan authorities saying that steady progress had been made in solid waste management in comparison to other countries in the region due to the efforts of the CEA.

“The CEA has launched a series of well-planned programmes for solid waste management at national level and all these programmes have brought excellent results. One such programme was the construction of compost bins undertaken by the local government authorities. By implementing this programme a number of local government bodies have found solutions to their solid waste problems,” Minister Priyadharshana Yapa emphasized.

Director General Ramani Allepola, Deputy DG J.M.U. Indraratne, Pilisaru Project Director Jayavilal Fernando also participated
