Over 2,000 tons of E-waste had been collected under the National E-waste Management Programme, a Central Environmental Authority spokesman told the Daily News Tuesday. He said that 1400 tons had been collected last year after the commencement of the programme and 600 tons had been collected upto July this year.
He said that the collected E-waste was exported to Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore and Germany and recovery certificates were obtained from these countries. "Sri Lanka does not possess recycle facilities for electronic waste. Therefore, partner organizations export these hauls for recycling," he said. He said that countrywide Singer sale outlets collect various outdated house appliances whereas Metropolitan centres collect office appliances. Countrywide Dialog Arcades collect discarded mobile phones. Public can obtain more information on collection centres on 1919.
