The government has appointed a committee to identify people whose lands will be acquired for the second phase of Hambantota port project, an official of the Ministry of Ports and Highways said.
"The Cabinet gave approval on Wednesday to a proposal submitted by the President to appoint a committee to look into the matter," Additional Secretary to the ministry, A. Jayawickrama said.
The committee comprises nine members headed by Jayawickrama including government officials in Hambantota. It is currently in the process of developing a scheme to provide compensation to the land owners.
"The committee will identify government owned lands in the Hambantota district and compensate the land owners for their lands, in the vicinity of the port, given for the port project," he said.
A choice would be given to the land owners to decide whether they want land or money as compensation.
Responding to a query Jayawickrama said that the land values will be evaluated by the Valuation Department officials who are also in the committee.
According to Jayawickrama the government has already compensated the land owners whose lands were acquired for the first phase of the project.
