A poacher who illegally entered the Russagala forest reserve and killed a pangolin (of the anteater family) was taken into custody by the Kurunegala Police Anti-Vice Squad. The suspect was roasting the carcass of the animal when the police carried out the raid. A senior police official said the fullly grown pangolin weighing abut 750 grams had been killed for meat. He said pangolins belonged to a species facing extinction and that it was illegal to kill them. The suspect was produced before the Kurunegala magistrate and fined Rs.30,000. OIC Kurunegala Division Anti- Vice Squad, SI Ruwan Ranasinghe Sergeants 13097 Tennakoon, 58612 Jayasekara, 12382 Dissanayake, PCs 22016, Sugathapala and 35681 Tennakoon carried out the raid on information received from the public.
