The government yesterday finally imposed mandatory rule requiring all fruits and vegetables to be transported in plastic crates in order to put an end to large scale damage caused to these perishable commodities when packed in gunny bags, but when we visited the country’s premier wholesale market in Pettah we found that the new law is only observed in the breach. Here, one trucker has even made an attempt to hide his load of vegetables which are packed into bags from prying eyes by putting a cover over it, but the prevailing strong winds had dislodged it partially.
