The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) ,in an attempt to increase its revenue for development purposes to give a better deal to rate-payers, has decided to charge a tax on every business establishment for displaying hoardings.
Deputy Mayor of the CMC Titus Perera told The Island that although this law had been in force for sometime, some establishments had not paid their dues to the CMC, and hereafter they would be strict with defaulters.
He said that the CMC charged Rs. 200 per square foot per year and that they could collect a tidy sum from this exercise for the development of the city.
The CMC also plans to auction areas where hoardings could be displayed, which is another way to bring in more revenue to the Council. Unauthorised hoardings and structures too would come under the microscope of the CMC for removal.
