Training for Wayamba fishermen

CHRISTIE FERNANDO, Chilaw special correspondent

An intensive training in marine fisheries will be imparted to fishermen soon by the Wayamba Provincial Fisheries Ministry in collaboration with the Wayamba University.

“Our aim is to impart all round education in fishing technology,” said Provincial Minister of Fisheries, Road Development, Electricity, Housing and Construction Sanath Nishantha Perera. The minister was addressing the gathering after handing over a large number of fibreglass teppan fishing boats to fishermen in Kurungnanpitiya fishing hamlet in Kalpitiya recently. The teppan boats were provided with a fifty percent subsidy as relief assistance at concessional interest rates. The minister said the teppan fishermen who go out fishing in the lagoon, will never demand a salary hike. He said he hoped to bring ashore fish in abundance to uplift the living standard of fishermen.

“Fishermen do not demand an overtime payment, etc. They only demand a reasonable price for the fish.
