Transport Minister Kumar Welgama told Parliament yesterday that tenders had been called to put up ‘Bell and Light’ railway crossings in 230 unprotected railway crossings in the country.
This system would inform the public of an oncoming train with a red light and ringing of a bell. The government had allocated a sum of Rs 1,000 million for the purpose. One such system would cost around six million rupees, the minister said.
It would be introduced as an alternative to the costly automatic rail gates. There were 90 unprotected rail crossings between Matara to Galle. For 29 of them Bell and Light system had been fixed and the same would be followed for the remaining 61 crossings, the minister said adding that priority would be given to the coastal line railway, from Colombo to Matara, in setting up the new system.
The Transport Minister eas responding to a question raised by Matara District UNP MP Buddhika Pathirana.
