Prof. Senaka Bibile Memorial Committee National Organiser (SBMC) Dr. Jayantha Bandara yesterday said that about 117 heart patients in Pakistan had died due to drug poisoning and the death toll could rise. Health authorities in Pakistan had been conducting investigations on five kinds of drugs. The other patients who used the drug were being monitored while taking legal action against the drug manufacturing companies.
Dr. Bandara said that in a letter sent to Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena, the SBMC had pointed out that of five kinds of drugs used by heart patients in Sri Lanka, only one called "Isosorbide mononitrate" had been banned in the country by a special circular.Dr. Bandara said that Sri Lanka had been importing drugs from Pakistan for a long time. As a responsible Committee, the SBMC would request Minister Sirisena to pay special attention to conduct awareness programmes for all health personnel, pharmacists and people on the correct use of drugs, he said.
Dr. Bandara requested Minister Sirisena to find out whether the Health Ministry had been informed of the drug poisoning cases in Pakistan officially, whether the harmful drugs used in Pakistan had been imported to Sri Lanka and whether the drugs had been sold to patients.
