Measures have been taken to initiate sea cucumber farming for the first time in Sri Lanka. This project will commence from the Mannar district this year.
"We hope to export sea cucumber to Vietnam," Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said.
Minister Senaratne was addressing a fisheries community meeting in Kalutara recently.
Arrangements are in place to establish three canned fish factories in Sri Lanka to produce tinned fish essential for daily consumption in the country, he said.
The three canned fish factories are to be established in Galle, Mundalama and Peliyagoda. Around 45,000 cans of fish will be manufactured here per day. Around 100,000 cans of fish are needed for daily consumption in the country.
Measures will be taken in the future to establish more canned fish factories in Sri Lanka, he added. Arrangements have also been made to launch a sea weed farming project in April which will provide 20,000 employment opportunities.
Plans are also afoot to produce 4,000 metric tons of sea weeds per year. Modha fish farming project will also be launched.
"All these efforts will make a positive change and develop Sri Lanka's fisheries industry," he added. RD
