The Transport Ministry will commence a super luxury low-floor city bus service on six main routes to reduce the number of private vehicles entering Colombo.
Transport Ministry Secretary Dhammika Perera told the Daily News that the six main routes - Moratuwa - Pettah, Kesbewa - Pettah, Negombo - Pettah, Gampaha - Pettah, Kaduwela - Pettah via Malabe and Homagama - Pettah have been identified as areas reporting heavy traffic congestion due to the increasing number of private vehicles entering Colombo daily.
"The new super luxury low-floor city bus service which will be introduced in the Colombo city limits is expected to limit the number of vehicles entering the Colombo district, and thereby reduce traffic congestion while offering a better service to passengers," Perera said.
The project's main objective is to attract passengers using individual vehicles to use public transport. This will help reduce traffic and travel time, he said.
"We commenced a pilot project deploying two super luxury low-floor city buses to Moratuwa - Pettah and Negombo - Pettah routes. These two services are operating successfully," Perera said.
Considering passenger demands, initiatives are now underway to operate eight new super luxury low-floor city bus services on two routes of Moratuwa - Pettah and Negombo - Pettah during peak hours every 15 minutes.
These eight new buses have been imported from China by Micro Cars Ltd and will be operated by the company itself, he said.
