More than 30,000 kilograms of vegetables were destroyed yesterday morning at the Dambulla Economic Centre as a glut had sent prices crashing, reports said.
"There were surplus vegetables but the consumer demand had dropped", trade officials said.
There was no option but to destroy the stock as they are perishable consumables, they said.
The price of brinjals, tomatoes, beetroot, green chillies, cabbage and cucumber were amongst the vegetables which were in surplus, but carrots, green beans, leeks and capsicum were amongst the varieties which still fetched a relatively higher price, they said.
