No more free towing on EO1

By Pabodha Hettige

The government has decided to charge as much as Rs. 2,500 each for removing vehicles that stall on the southern expressway with effect from next week.

Since the opening of the southern highway (EO1), stalled vehicles have so far been towed away free of charge.

"Since November more than 1,000 vehicles have been towed from the expressway," Director, Maintenance, Southern Expressway, T.K Ranatunga said. It cost the road authorities about Rs. 1,500 to remove a single vehicle, he said.

Ranatunga also said that the number of breakdowns on the expressway had increased. "This year there had been nearly 3,000 such breakdowns, mostly due to the negligence of drivers," he said.
