Paddy millers are in the process of jacking up their prices to mill paddy by at least a rupee by the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April citing the recent fuel price hikes.
A paddy miller in Nikaweratiya told The Island that millers at the moment charge Rs. 3 to Rs. 3.50 per kilo of paddy and were contemplating increasing it to Rs. 4 or Rs. 4.50 a kilo.
He said that due to an excess of paddy in the market after a good Maha harvest, there was not much of a demand, but as the demand increased by the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, the millers were contemplating increasing their prices.
He also said that due to this reason the prices of various verities of rice would also increase. The millers were purchasing paddy straight from the farmers like the Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) did, but pay about one rupee less a kilo as the diesel price had increased to transport paddy to their mills.
