N’cholai expected to resume ops on Sunday

By Ifham Nizam

The Norachcholai coal-fired powered plant is scheduled to resume operations, after a lapse of 22 days, on Sunday.

The 22-day shutdown of the plant is said to have cost the debt-ridden Ceylon Electricity Board billions as it had to purchase power from the private sector at a cost of over Rs. 80 million a day to meet the demand.

The Plant’s General Manager, Senior Engineer Saliya Panditharatne told The Island yesterday the repairs were coming to an end but declined to give the exact date for resuming operations.

The seasoned engineer said that they were working day and night since January 21 to put the 300 MW plant back in operation.

According to technicians, the damage to plant was caused by a faulty oil seal in the lubricating pump.

Power and Energy Ministry officials said that repairs to the coal power plant were delayed due to the time needed for the machinery to cool.

The plant broke down on January 21 for the third time in two months.

CEB Acting Chairman, Electrical Engineer, Anura Wijepala earlier this week told The Island that according to his estimate it would take at least 10 more days to repair the plant after the latest breakdown which occurred on Jan. 21.

The CEB Chief also requested the Chinese firm to notify in writing when it would complete repairs.

He said due to such breakdowns, the CEB would now be going for a contractual option with the plant builder to take remedial action.
