CMC intensifies anti-dengue campaign

By Jayantha de Silva

The Colombo Municipal Council has intensified its anti Dengue drive with onset of rains and several instances of patients warded at both state and private hospitals contracting the deadly dengue fever being uncovered by the CMC Public Health Department between mid last year and this year.

Apart from state institutions being identified as fertile grounds for proliferation of dengue, the CMC on a request of the Medical Supplies Department under the Health Ministry last week fumigated the latter’s premises identified as a potential major breeding ground for the dengue vector.

Two Dengue patients have been detected in Wards No. 55, 58, in addition to a patient from the Colombo Eye Hospital.

Apart from that a female dengue patient has been reported from a private hospital.

In the Fort area CGR yard, Army Tripoli Barrack and the Hindu Kovil have been identified as potential Dengue vector breeding areas.

Notice had already been issued on the CGR yard in this regard.

While the private sector has shown its willingness to comply with the Public Health Inspectors instructions in this regard, the state sector by virtue of being government institutions had shown a lukewarm response, making it difficult to implement anti dengue programmes.
