Investigations conducted by the Health Ministry have discovered that the two drugs provided to De Soysa Maternity Hospital are of high quality and nothing was wrong with the quality of the drugs, as stated by a specialist doctor who gave evidence in connection with the death of a mother, a Health Ministry spokesman said.
According to the spokesman the two drugs, Augmentin and Meropenum provided to the hospital are of high quality and not affected by any quality failures. The Health Ministry’s Medical Supplies Division does not supply drugs in their brand names but supply drugs in their generic names. The generic name of the drug is Coamoxiclav and not Augmentin.
Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena ordered a full investigation into the death of the 27-year mother who died at De Soysa Maternity Hospital, Colombo after a caesarian operation.
Two teams from the Medical Supplies Division and the National Drug Quality Laboratory and the National Cosmetic Devices and Drugs Regulatory Authority were sent to conduct investigations, he said.
Giving evidence a specialist doctor attached to the hospital had stated that the mother could have been saved if good quality antibiotics had been available.
The quality of drugs should be decided by conducting relevant laboratory tests and analysis. A doctor cannot judge the quality of drugs without scientific findings.
Miropenam and Augmentin had been given to the mother who died, he added. A 27-year mother from Nittabuwa died after a caesarian operation at De Soysa Maternity Hospital, Colombo.
She was admitted to the hospital for a child birth and a caesarian operation performed because of a delayed delivery.
After the operation she developed fever and was given antibiotics. A prescribed laparoscopic operation had also been delayed.

කොළඹ ද සොයිසා කාන්තා රෝහලේදී එක්දරු මවක මියගොස් තිබෙන්නේ නියමිත ඖෂධ අවශ්ය ප්රමාණයට ලබා නොදීම නිසා යෑයි පරීක්ෂණවලදී හෙළිවී ඇති බව සෞඛ්ය අමාත්යාංශයේ ජ්යෙෂ්ඨ නිලධාරියෙක් "දිවයින"ට පැවසුවේය. මෙම මවට ලබා දුන් ඖෂධ තත්ත්වයෙන් බාල නිසා ඇගේ මරණය සිදුවූ බවට කරන ප්රකාශය පිළිබඳ සොයා බැලීමට සෞඛ්ය ඇමැතිවරයා පසුගියදා විශේෂ පරීක්ෂණ කණ්ඩායම් දෙකක් පත් කළේය.
එම පරීක්ෂණවලට අනුව හෙළිවී ඇත්තේ මෙම මවට නෙරෝටනස් සහ කෝ මොක්සික්ලේට් යන ඖෂධ ලබා දී ඇති බවයි. එම ඖෂධ තත්ත්වයෙන් බාල බවට වාර්තා වී නැතැයි ද පරීක්ෂණ කණ්ඩායම විසින් හෙළිදරව් කරගෙන තිබෙන බව ඉහත නිලධාරියා පැවසුවේය.
රෝගියාට අදාළ ඖෂධවලින් මිලිග්රෑම් දහසක් ලබාදිය යුතු වුවද වෛද්යවරයා විසින් දී ඇත්තේ මිලිග්රෑම් 500 ක් බව ද පරීක්ෂණ කණ්ඩායම විසින් අනාවරණය කරගෙන ඇතැයි කී ඉහත නිලධාරියා එම ප්රමාණය මෙම කාන්තාවට කිසිසේත් ප්රමාණවත් නොවන බවද කීය.
එම නිසා ඇගේ මරණයට හේතු වී ඇත්තේ මෙම කරුණ බව පැවැසූ ඉහත නිලධාරියා මේ සම්බන්ධව තවදුරටත් පරීක්ෂණ පවත්වන බවද කීය.
