Fisherman arrested for selling turtle eggs

A person was arrested by the Matara Anti Vice Squad for illegally selling turtle eggs to a policeman. The suspect who is a fisherman by profession had sold 25 eggs for Rs 300 to the policeman who posed as a buyer.

Police said that the man who was arrested had been indulging this business for some time had collected the turtle eggs at night on the beach. He had been selling an egg for Rs. 12.50 to nearby tourist hotels and people.

Matara Anti Vice Squad OIC,IP Ananda Gunaratne after collecting information of his whereabouts deployed a policeman in civvies as a buyer to net the suspect. The suspect fell form the Police bait and was to be produced before the Matara Magistrate on the charges of illegal possession and selling of turtle eggs under the Wild Life and Flora and Fauna Act.
