GSMB to expand river sand mining

Nimal WIJESINGHE- Anuradhapura Additional District group cor.

The Geological Surveys and Mines Bureau (GSMB) has planned to expand its river sand mining programme in several parts of the country.

The Manampitiya river sand mining project in the Polonnaruwa district and the mining site at Wilagamuwa Minipe in Matale district administered by the GSMB provide around 2000 cubes of quality sand, excavated from the Mahaweli river. GSMB chairman Dr N A Wijayananda said that there is a move to start a large scale sand mining project in the Trincomalee district. The approval of the forest department is being sought as a prerequisite.

Dr Wijayananda said that over the years demand for sand has increased with the expansion of the development projects and it has become difficult to cater to the demand only with river sand.
