Northern cultivation boom brings bumper paddy harvest

Irangika RANGE

The government expects a bumper harvest of nearly 1.5 million metric tonnes of paddy from cultivation areas during this Maha season.

Co-operatives and Internal Trade Ministry Secretary Sunil S Sirisena told the Daily News that this was a result of several thousands of acres in the North and East being brought under paddy cultivation after the end of the three decade war. He said that the Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) commenced purchasing paddy

during the 2012 Maha season under its national paddy purchasing programme. "The PMB has begun purchasing paddy from farmers in Ampara and Akkaraipatttu areas," he said.

A kilo of samba is purchased at Rs 30 while a kilo of nadu is purchased at Rs 28. The government's intervention in paddy purchasing has resulted in maintaining a price stability in the market. With the bumper paddy harvest, the government is maintaining a buffer stock of 140,000 metric tonnes of paddy at the PMB granaries, Sirisensa said. These stocks will be issued to Sathosa retail outlets and co-operative sales outlets to keep rice prices stable, he said
