You are drinking more salt these days

By Ifham Nizam

The increased salinity level in the drinking water in the greater Colombo region will not affect the public as it had not exceeded the safe drinking level, claimed National Water Supplies and Drainage Board, Chairman, Karunasena Hettiarachchi.

He told The Island yesterday that the salinity level was high in recent days as there was a low flow in the river due to drought conditions and it caused an intrusion of salt water with the high tide.

He said that nothing could be done about it as it was a natural phenomena happening in dry periods. However, he said that they were constantly monitoring salinity level.

Asked about claims that there weren’t sufficient chlorine stocks to add to drinking water or whether the usage of chlorine was minimized, the Chairman said that there was no issue like that.

Colombo Municipal Council, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Prasad Kariyawasam told The Island too much of salt in the drinking water was not good for patients with hypertension and patients with other ailments particularly related to kidneys.
