Surveyor General, Mahesh Fernando, correcting a recent statement of a minister, said yesterday that there was no need to hire surveyors from India to survey Mahaweli lands when Sri Lanka had enough surveyors for the task.
Recently the Minister of Irrigation and Water Resource Management, Nimal Siripala de Silva said that 200 surveyors from India would be brought down since the government’s attempts to deploy local surveyors to complete the task had failed.
The ministry was planning to expedite the granting of deeds to the new settlers in Mahaweli zones, he said.
"Discussions regarding the matter are scheduled to take place tomorrow (15) with the minister and the relevant officials," Fernando said.
He said that the task could be completed by the state and private sector surveyors expeditiously provided that adequate funds were allocated for the task and salaries of the surveyors were paid on time.
Currently, there are 1,100 licensed private sector surveyors registered with the Land survey Council and 450 state sector surveyors under the Surveyor General’s Department.
"The Department is training 100 more surveyors and about 30 new surveyors among Sabaragamuwa University graduates are expected to be recruited in about one and a half months," Fernando added.
