CEB engineers pull out of additional responsibilities

By Ifham Nizam

Nearly 100 engineers of the powerful Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers Union (CEBEU) yesterday decided to pull out from all technical and evaluation committees of the Board with immediate effect.

Sources said yesterday that things were moving at a snail’s space in all on-going projects due to engineers pulling out from all their additional responsibilities.

Engineers are involved from top management level to Cabinet approved tender boards and implementation of projects particularly in the north and east.

CEBEU Media Spokesman told The Island yesterday that they had been compelled to pull out as their demands were not met. On Feb. 15, the Union passed a resolution demanding the immediate implementation of a salary revision already approved by the CEB Management. The Engineers started their campaign with ‘safety operations’ and would move on to other campaigns step by step.

Among the other issues are the forced retirement of some senior engineers and the interdiction of a senior engineer last May on the instructions of the Minister.
